Support for foster carers

As a valued foster carer with Wakefield Council you can expect a wealth of support, both financially and emotionally. You can receive between £650 and over £3,000 per month (depending upon your experience, number of children and the age group you specialise in) with periods of paid breaks.

All foster carers qualify for tax breaks, which mean you don't pay tax on your income from fostering, up to £10,000 plus allowances. The amount of money you will receive is broken down into:

  • A weekly allowance for each child placed with you, based on the age of the child.
  • A further weekly payment based on skill levels and competence. Most new carers fostering in Wakefield start on skill level 1 and as skills develop, carers progress up to skill levels 2 and 3.
  • Additional payments will also be made for birthdays, Christmas, holidays and other significant religious events.

As well as looking after your finances we know that having a strong support network is vital. All our foster carers have:

  • The support and supervision of a social worker
  • Access to 24-hour fostering support
  • A host of training programmes within Wakefield to improve knowledge and skills
  • Support groups
  • Experienced carers on-hand to offer advice
  • A manual packed with information
  • Information and advice regarding the background and circumstances of children placed with you
  • Information about a range of voluntary/leisure or community services that could be accessible in your area
