Who can foster?

When it comes to fostering, committed, enthusiastic people is what we're looking for. People from all walks of life can apply for fostering in Wakefield, regardless of:

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Gender
  • Sexuality
  • Disability
  • Single or in a relationship
  • Employed or unemployed
  • Homeowner or in rented accommodation

The only requirements are that you're over 21, have a spare room in your home and, of course, room in your life to accommodate a child or young person.

In order to foster we'll need to check your:

  • Health and make sure your home is safe for a child to live in. Smoke free homes are strongly preferred, as each child’s health is extremely important and no child under 5 years or with respiratory problems will be placed with a smoker.
  • All foster carers and anyone else in the household over 18 years of age will also be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check, as certain offences would prevent you from fostering.

If you live outside Wakefield you can still apply to foster with us as we are keen to recruit carers from neighbouring areas, however we would have to consider the distance and travelling time as we want to ensure that all our children and young people can maintain contact with their family and friends and maintain their education. If you're already fostering through another organisation you can still register with us, and one of our team can either ring or visit you to talk you through what we have to offer.
